Training Wirehaired Pointing Griffons

The Dutch Origins of Wirehaired Pointing Griffons

Understanding the Griffon’s Dutch connections has gotten complicated with all the breed history debates and national pride involved. As someone who has traced the breed’s origins through primary sources, I learned everything there is to know about Eduard Korthals and his Dutch heritage. Today, I will share it all with you.

Here’s the essential backstory: while the Griffon is registered as a French breed, its creator was Dutch, and that heritage influenced his breeding philosophy.

Eduard Korthals

Probably should have led with this section, honestly. Born in Amsterdam in 1851, Korthals developed his passion for dogs and hunting in the Netherlands. His father’s banking fortune allowed him to pursue breeding as a serious endeavor rather than a hobby.

Dutch Hunting Traditions

That’s what makes the Dutch context important—the Netherlands had strong traditions of versatile hunting dogs working diverse terrain and game. Korthals sought to create a dog that excelled across all hunting scenarios, reflecting Dutch practical expectations.

Foundation Stock

Korthals began with seven foundation dogs, including breeds available in the Netherlands and Germany. He documented his breeding program meticulously, leaving records that still inform breed understanding today.

Moving to France

Employment opportunities took Korthals to France, where he established his breeding program on a larger scale. The move didn’t change his Dutch breeding philosophy—he simply had more resources to implement it.

Lasting Dutch Influence

The Griffon retains characteristics reflecting Dutch practical hunting traditions: versatility, all-weather capability, and sound temperament. Modern breeders continue honoring Korthals’ original vision regardless of which country claims the breed.
